About John
John Haney is a life-long resident of North Denver; small business owner; Detective with the Denver Police Department and family man.
With his deep roots in North Denver, John truly understands the needs of our community and shares the same aspirations as his neighbors – making North Denver a safe and prosperous place where families and businesses thrive.
Born and raised in North Denver, John is the grandson of Irish immigrants. His dad, Tom, retired from Gates Rubber Company. His mom, Mary Jane (also a North Denver native), was a homemaker, very busy raising John and his ten siblings. John attended school at St. Dominic’s, Cathedral Catholic and North High.
After school, John felt compelled to serve our country and enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Munich, Germany and Fitzsimmons and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1978.
John had wanted to be a police officer ever since he was a little boy. So in 1984, he decided it was time to pursue that dream and he volunteered as a Reserve Officer for Denver Police. In 1986, he became a Training Officer with the Thornton Police Department. He transferred to the Denver Police Department in 1994, where he was quickly promoted to Detective. John has received numerous awards for outstanding service during his public service career including: the Medal of Valor, Merit Awards and several Letters of Commendation.
John is an active, involved, proud parent of seven children: Sean, Shela, Shannon, Shelby, Shea, Patrick and Vincent. A staunch supporter of Denver Public Schools, his youngest two children currently attend Skinner Middle School. John has also coached the Denver Nuggets Summer Basketball Program at Skinner for four years.
John and his wife, Kathy, saw a need in their area for an old-fashioned neighborhood coffee shop. They also wanted a business close to home so they could be near their kids’ school. They opened Haney’s Coffee Shop at Lowell and 38th in 2004. The coffee shop is a popular neighborhood gathering place, and John and Kathy attribute its success to their beloved and loyal customers.
John is now looking forward to a new opportunity to serve North Denver by representing his neighbors on Denver City Council.
